World Cup 2023: Afghanistan player reprimanded by ICC for Code of Conduct Breach

Afghanistan pulled off a superb victory over defending champions England in the ICC World Cup 2023 on Sunday (October 15), but it has now been soured as one of their players have come under the jurisdiction of ICC.

The player is Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who has been sanctioned with a reprimand for breaching Level 1 ICC code of conduct in their match against England.

It was determined that Gurbaz committed a violation against Article 2.2 of the ICC Players and Player Support Personnel Code of Conduct. This clause pertains to damage inflicted upon cricket equipment, clothing, on-site tools, or in-house fixtures during an international match.

The occurrence took place during the second half of Afghanistan's innings, specifically in the 19th over. After being dismissed on 80, Gurbaz expressed his frustration by striking his bat against the boundary line and a nearby chair.

The 21-year-old old going strong on his 80 runs off just 57 balls, and looked strong before being run-out as a mix-up with captain Hashmatullah Shahidi.

Level 1 infringements impose an obligatory penalty ranging from an official warning to a fine comprising half of a player's match fee, including one or two demerit points. Gurbaz also acknowledged his offence and accepted the punishment from ICC referee Jeff Crowe. A demerit point has also been added to Gurbaz's name, who committed his first mistake in a 24-month period.

Afghanistan have secured a fantastic victory over England in the World Cup. But their next challenge is equally tough as they take on New Zealand in Chennai.
