World Cup 2023: Fuming David Warner wants stats of umpires to be shown on big screen? 'There's no accountability'

World Cup 2023: Unhappy with Umpire's decision which led to his dismissal during Australia's match against Sri Lanka at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on Monday, David Warner has suggested the stats of on-field umpires also to be shown on the big screen.

Warner had reviewed the on-field umpire Joel Wilson's LBW decision against him only to get it affirmed by the TV umpire. The ball from left-arm pacer Dilshan Madushanka appeared to be leaving the leg-stump. However, the replays ruled the decision against him due to the umpire's call.

“Normally when something hits me on the leg on the outside, I know it’s pretty much going down leg. I asked Joel when I was out there … why did he give it out? He said the ball was swinging back. From my perspective on the replay, it wasn’t. When you see on the replay how it unfolded, you get a little bit annoyed," Warner said on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old opener said he would like to see umpires’ statistics on the scoreboard screen. He also minced no words in stating that it gets frustrating as a player to face such decisions.

“Players’ stats go up on the board as you walk out to bat,” he said. “When they announce the umpires, I’d love to see their stats come up on the board as well. The NRL does it. I think the NFL does it. It’s a great thing for the spectators to see as well.”

“You definitely know which umpires are going to give those 50-50 ones when it hits the pad, and that’s where from my perspective it gets frustrating,” he said. “There’s no bias in anything. It’s just that you feel that as a player sometimes," Warner stated.

Warner cleared out that his comments were not against a single umpire and clarified that there should be some accountability on their end. He mentioned how umpires in the National Rugby League (NRL) league don't officiate in the next game if they commit a howler.

“There has to be some accountability. If you get a decision wrong, just accept it and apologise. Players aren’t going to bite your head off. Umpires aren’t going to bite your head off if you ask them the question. They’re generally pretty honest. You see it with the bunker in the NRL. You get absolute stinkers and some umpires don’t umpire the next game," Warner said.

Australia have won just one of their first two World Cup 2023 matches and currently sit on eighth spot in the ten-team table. The five-time champions will face Pakistan on Friday in their next match.
