World Cup 2023: Why Sanju Samson may still make it to Team India for showpiece event

BCCI announced the Indian team for the ICC World Cup 2023, which starts next month in India.

The 15-member India squad for World Cup 2023 was announced on Tuesday (September 5) and it has mostly been an expected lineup for the Men in Blue. Rohit Sharma is set to lead the team while the likes of KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah are back after recovering from long-term injuries.

Sanju Samson

One of the talking points from the announcement has been the omission of Sanju Samson. The Kerala batter was left out of the provisional squad as Suryakumar Yadav was named. India went with two wicketkeepers, KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan.

After the omission of Samson, there have been grunts and anger from a section of fans. Despite Samson's fantastic ODI record, he hasn't received any consistent opportunities and now has fallen down the pecking order.

Samson, who is in Sri Lanka for India as a standby for Asia Cup, will be disappointed with it. But to be honest, the wicketkeeper-batter can still make it to the Indian squad for World Cup 2023.

Sanju Samson can still be drafted into the India squad before September 27. Although the provisional squad was announced on Tuesday, a team can still name their final squad ahead of the deadline day of September 27.

How Sanju Samson can still play in World Cup 2023

Hence we can still see Sanju Samson in the Indian team for World Cup. It is an improbable situation as Samson's selection can only come if any injury happens to either Ishan Kishan or KL Rahul.

KL Rahul has recently come back from injury and a further issue can't be ruled away. Samson is also a backup for both Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, and potential injuries to either of them can draft the Rajasthan Royals player into the side.

Just like Samson, Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin are also standing on the wings and any potential injury to the current players can make their way into the squad.
