By MyKhel Staff

Eden Gardens in Kolkata is set to host its first World Cup 2023 match on Saturday. But ahead of that, a major accident took place at the stadium on Thursday.

The iconic stadium in Kolkata is one of the best venues to play cricket. The century-old stadium has witnessed many historical moments of the game. This year, it is also set to host the India vs South Africa match and one of the semifinals. Pakistan will also play two matches here.

But ahead of Saturday's Bangladesh vs Netherlands clash, a mishap took place at the stadium in the city of joy. On Thursday, a part of the outer wall of the stadium collapsed after a collision with the earthmoving machine.

The incident took place just days before the first match. The outer wall was demolished and it took place near the lighting tower between Gate No. 3 and Gate No. 4. There are efforts already to repair the damage and it is to be seen how things get back in order before the first match.

Team India will play against South Africa at the same venue on November 5. Pakistan will also take on Bangladesh and England at this stadium.

This is the fourth ODI World Cup edition that is being played in Kolkata. The 1987 World Cup Final took place at the venue, while the stadium also hosted the notorious India vs Sri Lanka semifinal in 1996 World Cup. Eden Gardens also hosted the 2016 T20 World Cup Final, which is remembered for Carlos Brathwaite's four sixes in the last over to win West Indies their 2nd T20 title.
