World Cup 2023: Shakib Al Hasan faces race against time to get fit for India clash

By Chaithanya Gulapala

Shakib Al Hasan has been a torchbearer of the Bangladesh national cricket team for
more than a decade now. Bangladesh immensely benefitted from his contributions
as his services as an all-rounder played a quintessential role in the team's progress.

The experienced campaigner picked up an untimely injury during the group-stage
fixture against New Zealand in Chennai. The Bangladesh skipper experienced slight
pain in his left quadriceps while batting but continued to carry on in the game,
wherein he bowled his full quota of 10 overs.

The veteran underwent scans and the latest medical reports mentioned that he
sustained a slight quad tear. India will take on Bangladesh on October 19, Thursday
at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

After an emphatic six-wicket win over Afghanistan in Dharamsala, the Tigers lost the
next two games, succumbing to a colossal 137-run defeat against England at the
same venue before losing to New Zealand by 7 wickets in Chennai.

As if that weren't enough, things turned from bad to worse when Shakib Al Hasan
sustained an injury. Recently, Bangladesh team director Khaled Mahmud shared a
health update on Shakib, adding that the latter is doing well and is pain-free.

However, it remains to be seen whether or not he will be a part of the next game
against India. If he doesn't turn up for the game, then it would be a terrible blow to
Bangladesh's chances against India. The Tigers face an uphill battle to reach the top
four in the group stage after they lost two games out of the three.

While Bangladesh's linchpin is still doubtful for the upcoming game against India, the
team is optimistic that their captain will get fit in time to turn up for the crucial clash.
