Mathews came into the crease with a faulty helmet. And when he wanted to change that, the Bangladeshi captain appealed to the umpire. Things escalated soon and despite Matthews talking with Shakib, the Bangladesh Captain refused to withdraw his appeal. and the Sri Lankan all-rounder was given timed out.

This is the first incident in international cricket's history where a player has been deemed timed-out. Since the incident, Shakib Al Hasan has faced widespread criticism. Cricket, which is known as a gentleman's game, clearly lost its spirit when the Bangladeshi players decided not to revoke their appeal, much to the shock of the entire cricketing fraternity.

Shakib's act has been stated as 'disgraceful'. The Bangladesh captain could have withdrawn his appeal, but decided not to do so.

The Hindi commentators Mohammed Kaif and Deep Dasgupta also were surprised and reckoned Mathews already came into the crease. Kaif said on air that he didn't like the way Bangladeshi players appealed to the umpires.

Sri Lanka player Charith Asalanka said that the incident was against the Spirit of Cricket after the Lankan inning.

"Even leaving that tired phrase 'spirit of the game' aside, there are very good reasons for Shakib for not appealing for the timed out. Why anger & unite a team that had nothing to play for. Nothing to gain, lot of goodwill & reputation to lose!" Joy Bhattacharya said.
