World Cup 2023: Sri Lanka announce Dasun Shanaka-led squad, Hasaranga and Chameera miss out

World Cup 2023: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Tuesday announced their 15-member squad for the World Cup 2023. Maheesh Theekshana, Dilshan Madhushanka and Lahiru Kumara have recovered from their respective injuries and have been named in the squad, however, star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga and pacer Dushmantha Chameera failed to make the cut

Despite all the speculations and rumours, Dasun Shanaka has retained his place as the captain of the Sri Lanka team for the ICC marquee events. A few reports had suggested that Angelo Matthews would make a comeback and lead the Sri Lankan team in the World Cup 2023.

Dilshan Madhushanka and Lahiru Kumara, who did not feature in the Asia Cup 2023, have returned to the squad and bolstered the pace attack of Sri Lanka. In another good news, off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana, who was ruled out of the Asia Cup 2023 due to a grade 3 injury, has also recovered on time and found a place.

Young leg-spinner Dunith Wellalage and pace sensation Matheesha Pathirana are also set to travel to India. Pramod Madushan and Binura Fernando are the two members from the Asia Cup squad who are missing out. Chamika Karunaratne has been named as a travelling reserve.

A statement from SLC suggested that Wanindu Hasaranga is still recovering and could join the squad in case a player is injured during the course of the tournament. Chameera and Hasaranga injured themselves during the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023.

"Wanindu Hasaranga has not been included in the 15-member squad as the player is still in the process of recovering from an injury. His recovery will be monitored, and if he is declared fit to play, he will be considered as a replacement in the event of an injury to a squad member during the tournament." the SLC statement said.

Sri Lanka squad: Dasun Shanaka (C), Kusal Mendis (VC), Kusal Perera, Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dushan Hemantha, Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage, Kasun Rajitha, Matheesha Pathirana, Lahiru Kumara, Dilshan Madushanka
