World Cup 2023: Will Rahul Dravid Continue As Team India Head Coach After Two-Year Tenure Expires?

By MyKhel Staff

India fell to Australia in the final hurdle of the ICC World Cup 2023 after which Rahul Dravid's tenure as head coach of the senior men's national team came to an end.

Team India remained unbeaten in 10 matches, including the semi-final, and were the team to beat to win the World Cup. And Australia did exactly that on Sunday (November 19) in front of a packed house at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Rahul Dravid

While there were talks regarding Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli playing in the next edition of the ODI World Cup in 2027 after the defeat, Dravid was questioned about his own future in the post-match press conference.

Dravid took over the reigns as head coach in November 2021 after Ravi Shastri ended his four-year long stint in the role. Shastri left the role when his contract expired and on the back of a disappointing T20 World Cup in UAE.

Earlier reports suggested that Dravid too may follow the same pattern post the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. But for now the coach does not want to think about his future.

Will Dravid continue as Team India head coach?

Dravid said that his focus was entirely on the World Cup campaign and did not have time to think about the future, but will think about it when he gets the time.

"I haven't thought about it. I've just come off a game. I had no time to think about this and no time to reflect on this. Yeah, I will when I get the time to do that," he said at post match media conference.

"At this point of time, I was completely focused on this campaign and there was nothing else on my mind. And I haven't given any other thought to what happens in the future."

Dravid also said that he is not someone who is going to analyse and judge himself as a coach as he was proud to work with the Indian team and it was a privilege to coach the group.

"To be honest, I am not really someone who's going to judge and analyse myself. I was really proud to work with. I think the players that I worked with over the last two years in all the formats, it's been a privilege," Dravid added.

"Honestly, I haven't thought about it. I think all our campaign, all our energies were focused on this match, focused on this tournament, and focused till here. And I haven't actually given it any thought or I have no plans, I have had no plans of what's going to happen in the future."

There was talk before the World Cup that Dravid may not renew if India had won the tournament. And one report also quoted a source, who felt India should follow the pattern of England and South Africa of different coach for different format.

The same report also added that there has been question marks over his credentials as a white ball coach as he hasn't really left an impression which could compel anyone to consider him as a shrewd tactician.

He has rather been perceived as someone, who is a bit defensive when it comes to taking tough calls in ODI and T20Is. However, the performance by the team in the Asia Cup and the bygone World Cup may have proved his critics wrong.

Although there has been scrutiny of his role as a coach in the limited overs format, the record on the whole does not look that bad in white ball format. Here is a look at his coaching record with the senior team:
