WPL 2023: Alyssa Healy to Sophia Dunkley; Top Overseas batters to watch out for in the Women's Premier League

WPL 2023: Alyssa Healy to Beth Mooney: Top Overseas batters to watch out for. Which overseas batters will be key for their teams? Who will play the most important role? Check that out here.

WPL 2023

The inaugural Women's Premier League (WPL) is set to take the centre stage from March 4. The three-week-long women's T20 tournament will be taking place in Mumbai and five teams are part of the extravaganza in its debut season.

There will be some elite Indian talent on display along with some massive cricketing names across the world. The overseas players from Australia, England and South Africa dominated the WPL auction.

Recently crowned Women's T20 World Cup champions Australia do have many representatives in the WPL, so do players from South Africa, England, New Zealand and other countries. With some big names set to ignite the WPL, our focus in this article shifts to top five overseas batters who may play a huge part in their team's fortunes-

WPL 2023: Top Five Overseas batters to keep an eye on-

1. Beth Mooney (Gujarat Giants)

1. Beth Mooney (Gujarat Giants)

Country: Australia

WPL Auction Price: INR 2 crore

The Australian batter, currently ranked 2 in T20 cricket, was a massive buy for Gujarat Giants. The 29-year-old has been a stellar performer for her country and was instrumental for Australia in the Women's T20 World Cup, which they won recently. She was the third-highest run-scorer in the tournament and was the player of the match in the final. The Aussie opener will be a vital cog in the Giants setup and her experience, winning mentality and amazing batting quality will be pivotal for her team. Her ability to keep wickets will also come in handy for them and Mooney for sure will be one of the first names on the team sheet.

2. Alyssa Healy (UP Warriorz)

2. Alyssa Healy (UP Warriorz)

Country: Australia

IPL Auction Price: INR 70 Lakh

Alyssa Healy was roped in by the UP Warriorz at a fairly modest price. The crafty Australian batter is a top-class performer. She opens the batting and generally plays the anchor role in an inning. With the UP Warriorz, her role will be a bit different as she may have to be the aggressor. She can play around the bowlers, while can thrash them when the situation demands. The veteran scored 189 runs in the Women's T20 World Cup and her host of experience will be pivotal for UP Warriorz.

3. Meg Lanning (Delhi Capitals)

3. Meg Lanning (Delhi Capitals)

Country: Australia

WPL Auction Price: INR 1.1 crore

In our long list of Australians in this article, the final name is their captain, Meg Lanning. A player who generally bats at no. 3, Lanning provides solidity and ruthlessness at the same time in her batting. Lanning, the 30-year-old, can bat anywhere in the lineup and that provides Delhi Capitals with massive flexibility. Her role in the DC will not just be batting, but providing her experience to the fray as well. The DC are yet to announce their captain for the inaugural season, and Lanning is one of the frontrunners for that. She recently led Australia to the Women's T20 World Cup and with her experience and skills, Lanning will surely be one of the players to watch out for in the WPL 2023.

4. Sophia Dunkley (Gujarat Giants)

4. Sophia Dunkley (Gujarat Giants)

Country: England

WPL Auction Price: INR 60 Lakh

England's Sophia Dunkley was snapped up by Gujarat Giants in the WPL auction. Sophia opens the batting for England and generally has the reputation as a destroyer up top as she takes on the pacers and scores with ease. In Indian conditions, it will be a test for her to showcase her hitting prowess, but Giants will be expecting her to dismantle the bowlers during the powerplay. With the likes of Beth Mooney, Ashleigh Gardner in their team, Dunkley's role can be specific and menacing for oppositions. She had a disappointing T20 World Cup as she only managed 78 runs, and WPL will be a perfect platform to revive her lost form.
