WPL 2023: Bizarre! DRS malfunction leads to confusion during UP Warriorz vs Mumbai Indians

Mumbai, Mar 12: In a bizarre incident during the Women's Premier League match between UP Warriorz and Mumbai Indians, a DRS call was reviewed twice after a wrong video of the ball tracker was played at first at DY Patil Stadium on Saturday.

The incident happened during the fifth over of the second innings when Mumbai Indians were chasing 161. At 40/0 in 4.5 overs, spinner Sophie Ecclestone made an appeal for lbw against Hayley Matthews that was turned down by on-field umpire Paschim Pathak.

The English spinner felt her delivery brushed off the pad before hitting the bat and soon signalled for a DRS review after convincing her captain Alyssa Healy.

However, the DRS call made little sense to many of the viewers as the ball appeared to have hit the bat first before brushing off the pad. The subsequent DRS review stunned many as the ball appeared to have hit Matthews' toe before going towards the bat.

The delivery, however, looked fuller than it appeared in real-time while the ball tracking revealed that it went on to hit the stumps after pitching in line.

Third umpire Chirra Ravikanthreddy soon urged Pathak to change her original decision. However, Matthews was convinced that the ball never touched her bat first and as it appeared, she stood her ground appealing for another review.

Upon another review, it was revealed that the third umpire was shown the wrong video on the first review while the review of the second revealed there was no contact between the ball and the pad before it hit the bat.

The third umpire then informed Pathak to stick with her original decision of not out.
