After being asked to bat, Delhi Capitals openers set the Brabourne Stadium on fire and scored a fifty each to help their team score record 223 runs for the loss of just two wickets. The total is now the second-highest in the history of women's T20 cricket.
Australia T20 World Cup-winning captain Meg Lanning blasted 72 runs off 43 balls, while star India opener Shafali Verma scored 84 off 45 to forge a 162-run partnership off just 87 balls. Lanning smashed a total of 14 fours, while Shafali hit ten cracking fours apart from four maximums.
South Africa Women star Marizanne Kapp and Jemimah Rodrigues capitalised on the momentum and scored 39(17) and 22(15) unbeaten runs each to help Delhi Capitals Women post the highest total of the inaugural Women's Premier League (WPL). In the opening match against Gujarat Giants on Saturday, Mumbai Indians Women posted 207 runs for the loss of five wickets. Their captain Harmanpreet Kaur scored 65 off 30. Later, Gujarat were bowled out for 64 runs only.
Shafali broke Harmanpreet's record for the highest individual score in the WPL by scoring 84 on Monday. RCB pacer Megan Schutt, who was sensation for Australia in the recently-concluded T20 World Cup 2023, leaked 45 runs in four overs and was the most expensive bowler. Renuka Singh gave away 24 runs in three overs, Preeti Bose 35 in four overs, Ellyse Perry 29 in three, Sophie Devine 20 in one and Asha Shobana 29 runs in two overs. Off-spinner Heather Knight picked both the wickets for RCB.
RCB-W will count on the likes of their captain Smriti Mandhana, Devine, Knight, Perry and Richa Ghosh to chase down the mammoth target.
Sunday' s second match will be played between UP Warriorz and Gujarat Giants at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
