WPL 2024 Auction: Date, Time, Venue, Bidding Rules For Women's Premier League

The players' auction ahead of the Women's Premier League or WPL 2024 will be held on December 9 in Mumbai, the BCCI announced on Friday. The second edition of the WPL could take place in February-March next year.

Mumbai Indians are the defending WPL champions, as they had beaten Delhi Capitals by seven wickets in the final on March 26 at the Brabourne Stadium earlier this year. Mumbai were led by Harmanpreet Kaur, while the recently retired Meg Lanning captained Delhi in 2023.

The five franchises -- Mumbai, Delhi, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz -- had retained 60 cricketers, including 21 from overseas, ahead of the auction. A total of 29 players were released from contract from the existing squads.

Here are the rules for the WPL auction:

1. Each team is allowed to purchase a minimum of 15 players and a maximum of 18 players.
2. Every team is allocated a purse value of INR 12 crore (approximately USD 1.46 million).
3. Teams have the option to acquire seven overseas players, including one from an Associate nation.
4. Teams can field up to five overseas players in their playing XI, with the condition that one must be from an Associate nation.

WPL 2024 bidding increments are structured as follows:

1. Bids up to INR 1 crore: Increments of INR 5 lakh
2. Bids from INR 1 crore to INR 2 crore: Increments of INR 10 lakh
3. Bids from INR 2 crore to INR 3 crore: Increments of INR 20 lakh
4. Bids from INR 3 crore onwards: Increments at the auctioneer's discretion, but not less than INR 20 lakh

The BCCI has incorporated strategy breaks every hour during the auction, allowing franchises a 10-minute duration to review and refine their tactics at regular intervals.
