In what was the Indian women's cricket's biggest payday, opener Smriti Mandhana became the most expensive buy at the Women's Premier League or WPL auction at Rs 3.40 crore to Royal Challengers Bangalore in Mumbai on Monday.
However, in a surprise auction, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur was not placed among the top 10 most expensive buys as she was sold for Rs 1.80 crore to Mumbai Indians.
Harmanpreet Kaur was named the Mumbai Indians captain right after as well by the franchise but the 33-year-old batter wasn't the most expensive Indian player in the squad as well with all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar coming to Mumbai Indians for Rs 1.90 crore.
England's Nat Sciver-Brunt was MI's most expensive player at Rs 3.20 crore. Mumbai also roped in another Indian international in wicketkeeper-batter Yashtika Bhatia for Rs 1.50 crore.
There was some surprise in the store too as experienced spinner Poonam Yadav went unsold at the auction.
No other Indian player touched the Rs 3 crore mark like Smriti Mandhana as Deepti Sharma was the second most expensive Indian at Rs 2.60 crore. The Indian all-rounder was bought by UP Warriorz.
Indian top-order batter Jemimah Rodrigues, who scored the winning run against Pakistan in T20 World Cup the other night, was sold for Rs 2.20 crore to Delhi Capitals, who also roped in explosive opener Shafali Verma for Rs 2 crore.
Finisher Richa Ghosh, who displayed her batting firepower against Pakistan last night and against Australia as well a few months ago, made big bucks too as she was sold for Rs 1.90 crore to Royal Challengers Bangalore. The Bengaluru franchise also roped in Indian seamer Renuka Singh for Rs 1.50 crore.
Gujarat Giants didn't spend big on Indian players as they bought Harleen Deol for Rs 40 lakh and later bought out-of-favour Sneh Rana for Rs 75 lakh. The franchise spent bigger on foreign players.
