While Australia qualified for the final after playing a winning the third against India in Indore, India got a push from New Zealand to qualify for their second consecutive final.

Notably, India had to win the 4-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia by at least a 3-1 margin to qualify.

However, that could not happen despite India winning the first two Tests. Australia won the third Test and the fourth Test in Ahmedabad ended in a draw.

As India settled for a 2-1 win, Sri Lanka had the opportunity to book their date with Australia with a 2-0 win over New Zealand. But their hope ended as soon as New Zealand won the first Test on the final ball of the match in Christchurch.

India qualified as soon as Kane Williamson ran that thrilling single off a bye. Later, New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka in the second and final Test as well.
