Opting to bat first, Ashwin (113) dug India out of a spot of bother at 144/6, forging a 199-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja, who also contributed 86 to take the hosts to 376.
Jasprit Bumrah then helped bundle out Bangladesh for 149 with a four-wicket haul. Although India had a substantial first innings lead of 227, skipper Rohit Sharma did not enforce follow-on.
Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill scored centuries as India declared at 287/4, setting a target of 515 for Bangladesh to chase down with almost seven sessions of play left in the Test.
The visitors got off to a decent start, but Bumrah ended the opening stand before Ashwin (6 for 88) and Jadeja (3 for 58) ran through the opposition to seal the massive win in the first session of day 4 on Sunday (September 22).
