WTC 2023-25 Standings After WI vs SA 2nd Test: Proteas Climb Two Spots With Series Win in West Indies

By MyKhel Staff

South Africa climbed up the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 standings after a 40-run series-clinching win over West Indies in the second Test at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Sunday (August 18).

Temba Bavuma's visiting South Africa side were rescued by brilliant bowling effort after the first innings batting collapse to registed a convincing win in the second Test following the drawn first Test earlier this month.

Shamar Joseph made early inroads into the South African batting line up, bundling vistors out for 160 with a five-wicket haul in his first Test on home soil. In response, the hosts were skittled for 144 after Wiaan Mulder and Nandre Burger ran through their batting order.

South Africa put on 246 in their second innings to set a target of 263 for the Windies in the final innings of the Test. Kagiso Rabada put the Proteas in the driver's seat until Gudakesh Motie and Joshua Da Silva showed some fight and gave West Indies hope of a win.

Spinner Keshav Maharaj, however, struck twice in the space of two overs to turn the tide in the vistors favour. As a result of the win, South Africa jumped two places, from seventh to fifth on the World Test Championship points table, leapfrogging England and Pakistan.

West Indies, on the other hand, remained in the ninth – bottom place on the standings with a 18.52 percent win-loss percentage following back-to-back series defeats to England and South Africa. Here is a look at the latest WTC standings:

The lower half of the WTC table will see a little more change the coming week, when Test action takes centre stage with Pakistan hosting Bangladesh and England playing hosts to Sri Lanka.

Table-toppers India also will resume their Test action at home against Bangladesh in September, when Sri Lanka also host New Zealand. Here is a look at the Test matches of the WTC 2023-25 cycle scheduled for August, September and start of October:
