India have qualified for the upcoming World Test Championship Final which is set to be played in June.
India have now sealed their berth for the WTC Final 2021-23 cycle and will be taking on Australia in the Final.
It happened after Sri Lanka's defeat to New Zealand in the 1st Test. The Lankans were the only team who could have leapfrogged the Indian team in the WTC table, but their defeat against the Kiwis have now confirmed India's consecutive appearances in the WTC finals.
Sri Lanka, who are touring New Zealand, needed a 2-0 series win to overtake India given India lost the final Test against Australia. But they suffered a narrow defeat in a thrilling first Test in Christchurch. Chasing a total of 285 runs, the Kiwis were cruising at one stage. A late slump took the game to the wire but Kane Williamson guided the hosts to a 2-wicket victory in the final ball of the Test match.
Williamson also scored his 27th Test hundred as the Blackcaps stalwart remained unbeaten on 121 runs to give his team a huge victory.
Although India are likely to get a draw as the 4th Test seems like heading towards a stalemate in Ahmedabad. With a couple of sessions to play, things would have been confirmed at the end of the match only, but Sri Lanka's defeat now given Rohit Sharma and his men an early cause of celebration.
India are leading the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2-1 and looks like they will win their 4th consecutive Test series against the Aussies, whom they will meet again in June in the WTC final. Australia will finish this WTC cycle at the summit of the table while India have now confirmed their 2nd place finish.
WTC Final 2023 will be played at the Kennington Oval in London. The match will be starting from June 7.
WTC Final 2023 Date: June 7 to June 11 (June 12 is the Reserve Day)
