WTC Points Table after India beat Afghanistan: Why is India's Position Unchanged Despite Win?

India have completed a thumping win over Afghanistan in the one-off Test in Mullanpur, as Shubman Gill and his men completed their rout of the Afghans by an innings and 300 runs.

The hosts were overwhelming over the minnows, who couldn't put up much of a fight across the two innings. Debutant Manav Suthar was excellent, as he ended with 7 wickets to his name in the match.

India batted first and piled a huge total of 564 before declaring. KL Rahul and Shubman Gill both scored centuries while Sai Sudharsan and Rishabh Pant both scored 81 runs each. In reply, Afghans were bundled out for 152 runs in the first innings, and upon follow on, they had an even bleaker outing, as they were skittled for just 112 runs in the 2nd innings.

But despite the win over Afghanistan, India's position in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table remains unchanged.

Why India's Win Over Afghanistan Did Not Change the Table

The ICC World Test Championship (2025-27) involves only nine full-member teams (Australia, India, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and West Indies). Afghanistan, despite having Test status, is not part of this cycle due to its limited red-ball schedule.

WTC points (12 for a win, 4 for a draw, 6 for a tie, with possible deductions for slow over-rates) are awarded only in designated series among these nine teams. The one-off Test against Afghanistan is a bilateral fixture outside the WTC framework, so it carries no points or impact on standings - regardless of the result.

This keeps the championship focused on consistent elite competition. India's record remains 9 matches: 4 wins, 4 losses, 1 draw (52 points, 48.15% PCT)

India's Next Test Assignment

India's next WTC Tests are a two-match away series against Sri Lanka in August this year. These matches are crucial for improving their position in the standings. Following Sri Lanka, India will tour New Zealand for two more Tests in November 2026.
