WTC table: India gain on table-toppers Australia in race to World Test Championship final

India reduced points difference between them and table-toppers Australia in WTC table after defeating them by an innings and 132 runs in the first Test in Nagpur on Saturday. Let's take a look at World Test Championship

WTC table: India's emphatic win over Australia by an innings and 132 runs in the Nagpur Test on Saturday put the second-placed side closer to the table toppers in race to the World Test Championship final.

Leading into the Border Gavaskar Test series, India were place second in the WTC table behind Australia. Australia headed into the game with a point percentage of 75.55% while India were a far second in the race with a point percentage of 58.92%. However, being second in the WTC table in enough to qualify for the World Test Championship final, slated in London's Oval on June 7-11.

India were more worried of Sri Lanka in the points table, who were at third spot at 53.33%. India did themselves a big favour with the win as they climbed to 61.67% on Saturday to go further away from Australia. The visitors, at the same time, lost close to 5 percentage point as they dropped to 70.83% with the loss.

As per WTC qualification scenario, India will confirm their spot in the WTC final if they beat Australia, 4-0 or 3-1 in the four-match Border Gavaskar series.

During the Nagpur Test, Australian batting cut a sorry figure as they scored just 177 on Day 1 with Ravindra Jadeja (5/37) wreaking havoc with his 11th Test five-wicket haul. In response, Rohit Sharma (120) slammed his ninth Test century, while Jadeja contributed another 70 with his bat, to help India post 400 runs. Axar Patel left his mark in the game too as he scored 84.
