Yashasvi Jaiswal Eyes Record of Sachin Tendulkar as Adelaide Test Looms

By MyKhel Staff

As Team India gears up for the pink-ball Test against Australia in Adelaide, Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the cusp of achieving a historic feat. The 22-year-old opener, enjoying a stellar run in 2024, needs just 282 runs to surpass Sachin Tendulkar's record of 1,562 Test runs in a calendar year.

Jaiswal's current tally stands at 1,280 runs from 12 matches at an average of 58.18, including three centuries and seven fifties. His highest score of 214 came earlier this year, showcasing his dominance on the global stage.

In the first Test against Australia in Perth, Jaiswal dazzled with a brilliant knock of 161 off 297 balls, a partnership of 201 runs for the first wicket with KL Rahul further solidifying his credentials as a match-winner.

Tendulkar's record, achieved in 14 Tests during the 2010 calendar year, included seven hundred and five fifties at an average of 78.10. Comparisons between the two players have intensified as Jaiswal has displayed remarkable consistency and adaptability in varying conditions.

Notably, the southpaw scored consecutive double-hundreds against England earlier this year, becoming only the third Indian to achieve such a feat. Globally, the highest tally of Test runs in a calendar year belongs to Pakistan's Mohammad Yousuf, who amassed 1,788 runs in 2006 at a stunning average of 99.33.

Jaiswal is currently ninth on the list of most Test runs in a calendar year by an Indian batter and could leapfrog legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, and Virat Kohli by year-end.

Jaiswal's meteoric rise has also propelled him to the No. 2 spot in the ICC Test batter rankings. With the Adelaide Test starting on December 6, the young opener has three more matches to etch his name in cricketing history.

Fans and analysts alike are eager to witness whether Jaiswal can carry his exceptional form forward and dethrone Tendulkar's milestone in what has already been a career-defining year.
