Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal's impressive Test cricket performance —1,478 runs at an average of 54.74 from just 15 matches—has put him in contention for a spot in India's ODI team ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
With three centuries and nine fifties under his belt, he has shown consistent form. While Jaiswal is already part of India's T20 squad, he didn't get a game during the T20 World Cup due to the presence of established openers like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. However, sources told myKhel that in the ODI format, there is a possibility that Jaiswal could be inducted into the team.

The prospect of him opening alongside Rohit Sharma or Shubman Gill could be reminiscent of the iconic trio of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and Virender Sehwag from the past. "Selectors are very keen to reward Jaiswal for his super show in Australia. He deserves to be a part of the ODI team. He also has the backing of the team management," a BCCI source said.
Sources have indicated that Jaiswal could be included in India's ODI squad as early as the England series at home, prior to the 2025 Champions Trophy. His strong Test and domestic form and potential for the top order could make him a key player in India's preparations for the upcoming tournament.
During the Melbourne Test against Australia, Yashasvi Jaiswal had a few key moments that could have changed the match's outcome. He dropped some crucial catches, which, if taken, might have had an impact on the fourth Test result. Jaiswal's dismissal to a short ball from Aussie captain Pat Cummins was also controversial.
The ball appeared to have barely touched his gloves, leading to a DRS review that ended with the decision going in favour of the fielding side. Some even felt it was a borderline call, resembling an optical illusion, as the ball seemed to skim his gloves while he attempted to hook a short delivery.
Despite the few setbacks, such as the dropped catches and controversial dismissal in the Melbourne Test, these factors shouldn't overshadow Jaiswal's overall potential for the ODI team.
In the five Test matches he has played in Australia, Jaiswal has been India's leading scorer (391 runs in 5 Tests at an average of 43.44, demonstrating his ability to perform in challenging conditions. His consistency and form in both domestic and international cricket make him a strong contender for the ODI squad, and these isolated incidents should not hinder his progression into the team.
