Yashasvi Jaiswal Scores 50+ on Test Debut in 3 Different Overseas Nations: India's Next Star in SENA Tours?

In an era where adapting to foreign conditions remains the ultimate litmus test for batters, Yashasvi Jaiswal is crafting a narrative that defies convention.

The young Indian opener has already achieved a feat few manage in their entire careers, scoring 50+ runs in his maiden Test match innings regularly across continents.

Yashasvi Jaiswal

At just 23, Jaiswal has not only announced himself as a permanent fixture in India's red-ball top order but has also exhibited a maturity and technical nous rare in modern-day openers. With the Test in England, Jaiswal has now played in five countries including India.

Outside home, Jaiswal has played in four other countries - South Africa, Australia, England and West Indies. And out of these four, the southpaw has racked up 50+ scores on debut matches in three of those countries.

West Indies - 171 (Debut Test)

Jaiswal's Test journey began in Roseau, Dominica, in July 2023, where he played a marathon innings of 171 runs on debut. It was a masterclass in temperament and application. While the West Indies bowling attack lacked venom, Jaiswal's innings was a testament to patience, lasting over 500 balls. He became the 17th Indian to score a hundred on debut, and the third highest on debut in Indian Test history. More importantly, this was a statement. A left-hander with flair, but willing to bat ugly. A flair player who respected conditions. That innings instantly set him apart.

South Africa - 17 & 5

The only blot in his near-flawless early Test resume came on the bouncy tracks of Centurion in December 2023. The Proteas pace battery-led by Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi-exploited Jaiswal's still-developing backfoot game, dismissing him cheaply in both innings.

Yet, this outing arguably served as a crucial learning curve. It exposed the areas Jaiswal would need to tighten up to dominate in the SENA nations.

Australia - 0 & 161

If his West Indies debut was about grit, his 161 in Sydney was pure brilliance. The left-hander bounced back from a duck in the first innings to launch a calculated assault on the Australians. The attack comprised Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon-all elite operators in home conditions. But Jaiswal countered bounce with backfoot elegance and spin with nimble footwork. The 161 was hailed as one of the finest knocks by a visiting opener in recent times.

England - 50 and Unbeaten

In the ongoing Test in England, Jaiswal has once again made his presence felt with a composed 50 not out. While the Headingley surface offered movement and swing, Jaiswal looked unfazed, leaving with precision and attacking anything too full. If he goes on to convert this into another big score, it will only solidify what is already becoming a staggering away record. He continues to bat on 66 runs off 108 balls, hitting 11 fours in the innings.

Is Yashasvi Jaiswal the next SENA Run Machine for India?

Although Indian batters have had their struggles across continents, the early signs for Yashavi Jaiswal look positive. It is still early days for the southpaw who will have to update his craftmanship and tactics rigorously to get consistent success in SENA countries. The 23-year-old has an average of 43 in Australia, 88 in West Indies, and a rather paltry 12 in South Africa. If he continues his decent start in England and ends up with a decent series, the door will open for Jaiswal for the next level. For now, it is too early to predict and give a verdict, but Yashasvi's early signs are encouraging.
