Yashasvi Jaiswal to Shubman Gill - Who Will Be India Openers in T20I After Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli Retire?

Team India are set for transition in T20I after stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma drew down the curtains from the shortest format on the international stage following the T20 World Cup triump on Saturday (June 29).

Moments after India defeated South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 final by 7 runs at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, skipper Rohit and star batter Kohli announced their retirement from T20Is.

Jaiswal and Gaikwad

The veteran duo's retirement not only vacates two spots in the squad, but also presents the chance for the next generation to make the opening slots their own before the next T20 World Cup in 2026.

Kohli and Rohit ended their T20 international careers as openers. The decision to open with the seasoned pair, forced the selectors to overlook youngsters in the bygone tournament. But those overlooked talents will soon be fighting for the vacant openers slots.

The Men's Selection Committee has already handed four potential candidates a chance to make the spot their own with the squad announcement for the upcoming 5-Match T20I series in Zimbabwe.

Who will be India openers in T20I after Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli retire?

The Indian squad for Zimbabwe tour includes four opening options in Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Abhishek Sharma, who has earned his first call up the the national team. Plus, there are few other big names, who have been tested in the role.

Apart from Gill, Gaikwad, Jaiswal and Abhishek, Team India also has KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan as possible options for the opening slots should they opt for the pair, who have been overlooked in the recent tournaments. Here is a look at the opening options and their stats batting in positions 1 and 2:

Yashasvi Jaiswal: The left-handed batter is likely to be India's all-format opener for the next few years. He has already played in the role in T20Is. In 16 innings, Jaiswal has amassed 502 runs, including 1 century and 4 fifties, at a strike rate of 161.93.

The 22-year-old, who also opens for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League, has struck 28 sixes and smashed 55 fours in the international stage when batting in the opening slot, making him the prime candidate for one of the top two positions in the batting order.

Shubman Gill: The right-hande batter, who is set to lead India in Zimbabwe, has also played in the role earlier in his 14 innings, in which he scored a total of 335 runs, including 1 centrury and 1 fifty.

The 24-year-old, who opens for Gujarat Titans in IPL, has been a consistent run-getter in the shortest format, but has not got enough opportunity on the international stage, where he has hit 16 sixes and 31 fours, striking at 147.57, making him a good second fiddle to Jaiswal.

Ruturaj Gaikwad: The right-handed batter, who has opened alongside Jaiswal on most instances, is likely to continue the partnership in Zimbabwe. He has so far scored 500 runs including a century and 3 fifties in 17 innings at a strike rate of 140.05.

The 27-year-old, who like Gill, has been a consistent peformer in IPL. The Chennai Super Kings skipper has struck 49 fours and 21 sixes in his international T20 outings and is a perfect choice to open alongside a left-handed opener.

Abhishek Sharma: The Punjab all-rounder, who had a terrific IPL 2024 with Sunrisers Hyderabad as an opening batter, is set to make his international debut after earning a much-deserved call up to the senior team.

In 38 innings as an opener in IPL, Abhishek has scored 1052 runs including 6 fifties at a strike rate of 156.32 with 52 sixes and 108 fours. While his numbers don't look very good, he had one of his best outings with the bat in the recent IPL.

With an ability to bowl left-arm orthodox, the 23-year-old brings an added advantage when compared to the other options for the Indian cricket team's opening slots. He also can bring that left-right combo into play with the bat.

Ishan Kishan: The wicketkeeper-batter may have fallen down the pecking order when it comes to a spot in the squad, but he will be in the conversation for an opening slot should he have a good domestic run.

The 25-year-old, who has played as an opener earlier for India, has amassed 662 runs batting at number 1 and 2 in 27 innings, in which he has scored 4 fifties, 73 fours and 26 sixes.

KL Rahul: Like Kishan, Rahul, another wicketkeeper-batter, is currently out of contention from the T20I plans. But the 32-year-old, who has played in the opening role for the national team, has a chance to get back in the conversation should the other fail.

In 54 innings batting at positions 1 and 2 in T20Is, Rahul, who opens for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL, has scored 1826 runs including 21 fifties, striking around 137 with 84 sixes and 147 fours.
