Year Ender 2024: Top T20 Centuries of the Year - Abhishek Sharma's 28-Ball Crackers to Travis Head's 41-Ball Fireworks

The year 2024 has been a rollercoaster ride for cricket enthusiasts, especially in the electrifying world of T20s. From thrilling IPL performances to jaw-dropping domestic heroics, batters have redefined boundaries and strike rates, leaving fans spellbound.

Among the standout performances, two centuries stood out for their sheer brilliance—Abhishek Sharma’s record-equalling 28-ball blitz in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) and Travis Head’s scintillating 41-ball knock in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Quickfire T20I centuries in 2024

Both innings showcased the relentless aggression that T20 cricket demands. While Abhishek stunned everyone with his audacious power-hitting in domestic cricket, Travis Head’s fireworks at the Chinnaswamy Stadium added a new chapter to IPL’s storied history.

As we revisit these unforgettable knocks, it’s clear that 2024 will be remembered as a year when batters pushed the boundaries of possibility. Here is a look at the Top T20 Centuries of the Year:

Travis Head: Fourth-Fastest IPL Century

Australian star Travis Head delivered an unforgettable knock for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2024. Smashing a scintillating 102 off just 41 balls, Head etched his name in IPL history with the fourth-fastest century in the tournament's annals.

At the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Head reached his milestone in a mere 39 balls, a feat only behind Chris Gayle, Yusuf Pathan, and David Miller. His blistering innings featured nine fours and eight towering sixes, propelling SRH to a formidable score of 171 in just 13 overs. The partnership between Head and Abhishek Sharma decimated the RCB attack, with the duo adding 100 runs in just over seven overs.

This century reinforced Head’s remarkable form following his ICC ODI World Cup heroics. It also showcased SRH's dominance, as they set the highest-ever IPL total of 287 in another match earlier in the season.

Abhishek Sharma: Record-Breaking 28-Ball Century

In domestic cricket, Punjab's Abhishek Sharma shattered records with a jaw-dropping 28-ball century against Meghalaya in the SMAT. Equalling the fastest T20 century by an Indian, Sharma's innings featured 11 sixes and eight fours, scoring an astonishing 98 runs in boundaries alone.

Punjab’s chase of 143 runs was a cakewalk, completed in just 9.3 overs, thanks to Sharma’s brilliance. His strike rate of 365.52 stunned the cricketing world, marking a spectacular return to form after a lean patch. Sharma’s exploits extended beyond his batting as he also claimed two wickets, further solidifying his all-round credentials.

This century, tied with Gujarat’s Urvil Patel’s effort earlier in the tournament, stands second only to Estonia's Sahil Chauhan, who holds the record for the fastest T20 century (27 balls).

A Year to Remember

Both Head and Sharma’s centuries exemplify the aggression and innovation that define modern T20 cricket. While Head’s IPL knock highlighted his consistency on the big stage, Sharma’s SMAT ton underscored the depth of talent in India’s domestic circuit.

Their innings join a list of historic T20 feats in 2024, which also saw records tumble, including Suryakumar Yadav’s record for most T20 sixes in a calendar year being eclipsed by Sharma.

As fans rewind the year, these two innings stand tall, offering a glimpse into cricket’s thrilling future. Whether it's the high-octane IPL or the competitive SMAT, T20 cricket continues to enthrall and evolve, delivering unforgettable moments.
