Bengaluru, Jan 19: After his Twenty20 record was equalled by West Indies' opening batsman Chris Gayle, all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has expressed his disappointment not because it was matched but not broken. (Gayle lashes out at critics after record)
On Monday (January 18), Gayle blasted a 12-ball half century to equal the world record of Yuvraj's for the fastest ever fifty in T20 history. Yuvraj had set the mark in 2007 at the World T20 Championships in South Africa.
Gayle, playing for the Melbourne Renegades against Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League (BBL), set the Docklands Stadium alight with his 17-ball 56 (2x4, 7x6). However, his record-equalling feat was not enough to take his team to victory.
Despite Gayle's fireworks at the top of the order, Renegades went down by 27 runs. The loss meant they were out of the competition, failing to make the semi-finals.
Later in the night, Yuvraj, who will leave for Australia on January 22 (Friday) to play 3 T20Is against the hosts, said he was disappointed that his record was not broken.
On his Twitter account, Yuvraj wrote, "I'm disappointed @henrygayle who got to fifty in 12 balls Kaka make sure u get it in ten balls next time or maybe @ABdeVilliers17 legends."
South African captain AB de Villiers holds the record for the fastest century in ODIs. He had blitzed a hundred off just 31 balls last year (January 18, 2015) against West Indies.
The Indian left-hander will be hoping that Gayle and De Villiers accept the challenge and score a 10-ball half century!
