Chandani Sharma, an 18-year-old leg-spinner from Lucknow, has made headlines by earning a spot in the India Under-19 'A’ team for the upcoming triangular series against India 'B’ and South Africa.
As per a report in the TOI, Chandani, who plays as a right-arm leg-break bowler, credited Indian all-rounder Yuzvendra Chahal as her inspiration, describing the veteran spinner as her 'idol’. “I try to emulate Chahal’s bowling and admire how Rohit handles pressure,” she said. “I hope to perform well and make my family and coaches proud.”

A resident of Bangla Bazar, Chandani’s journey is a testament to her grit and determination. From playing cricket in the narrow lanes of her neighbourhood to cycling 10 kilometres daily to train at the Northern Railway Stadium, she has overcome numerous challenges to achieve her dream.
Despite financial constraints, Chandani’s father, a barber, supported her passion for cricket. “My father couldn’t afford the academy fees, but he never held me back,” Chandani said, recalling her early struggles. “When he approached the coaches at the Northern Railway Stadium, he told them he couldn’t pay but wanted me to learn cricket.”
However, Chandani’s commitment was evident despite the setback, and after completing her Class 10 exams, she declared she wouldn’t eat until allowed to join a cricket academy.
“My coaches, Priyanka Shaili and Saima Ali, have been a tremendous help since then,” she added.
Chandani’s dedication has already yielded impressive results. In the recent Under-19 league matches in Haryana, she emerged as the highest wicket-taker for Uttar Pradesh, claiming 19 wickets in 9 games. Her performance caught the selectors’ attention, paving the way for her inclusion in the India 'A’ squad.
Priyanka Shaili, assistant sports secretary at the Northern Railway Stadium, praised Chandani’s journey. “Despite her poor background, Chandani’s passion and hard work stand out. Saima Ali has worked tirelessly with her, and we’ve ensured she receives proper meals and training,” she said. “Her recent performances made her selection inevitable.”
Chandani’s brother, Vikas Sharma, expressed pride in her achievements. “Our father ensured that all three of us sisters were educated and supported Chandani’s cricketing dreams despite financial hardships. Her passion is unmatched,” he said.
With the triangular series serving as a precursor to the Under-19 Cricket World Cup selections, Chandani now has a golden opportunity to cement her place in the national squad.
