ZIM vs AFG: First ODI Washed Off In Harare After Azmatullah Omarzai's Magical Spell

By MyKhel Staff

ZIM vs AFG: The first ODI between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan at the Harare Sports Club, was ultimately abandoned due to rain and a wet outfield, frustrating both teams and fans alike on December 17.

Despite the promise of a gripping contest, the unpredictable weather forced the match to be reduced to just 28 overs before rain halted play completely. Afghanistan, having won the toss, chose to bowl first.

ZIM vs AFG First ODI Abandoned

Zimbabwe's innings was quickly disrupted by the fierce swing and seam bowling of Azmatullah Omarzai, who delivered a sensational spell. Omarzai's four-wicket haul dismantled Zimbabwe's top order, leaving them at a dire 44/5 in just 9.2 overs. His precision with the ball, including crucial wickets like Ben Curran (15) and Sean Williams (0), proved too much for the Zimbabwean batters. The likes of Dion Myers and Tadiwanashe Marumani also fell to disciplined Afghan bowling.

While Zimbabwe's top order collapsed under the pressure, the match was further delayed as the heavy rain returned, forcing players off the field for the third time in the day. With no immediate respite from the weather, the prospects of any further play grew slim.

As the rain continued to intensify, the ground staff worked diligently to dry the field, but with puddles forming on the outfield, hopes of resuming play quickly diminished. The artificial lights were switched on, but the outfield remained unfit for play, and after waiting for an extended period, the inevitable decision was made to abandon the match.

This was a bitter blow to both sides, especially for Zimbabwe, who were struggling to put up any resistance against Afghanistan's fast bowlers. Nonetheless, with two more matches left in the three-match series, the teams will look to recover and shift focus to the next ODI, which will be held on December 19 at the same venue.

The weather forecast remains uncertain, but Zimbabwe will need to regroup quickly, while Afghanistan will be pleased with their dominant performance, albeit interrupted by the rain.
