Zimbabwe captain Chigumbura banned for 2 matches for slow over-rate

Lahore, May 28: Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura was handed over a two-match ban for maintaining a slow over rate in the first one-day international (ODI) against Pakistan here on Tuesday. The ban will mean Chigumbura will miss the rest of the three-match series.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Wednesday that the African side was found to be three overs short of its target during the high-scoring match that the hosts won by 41 runs. Chigumbura scored a 95-ball 117 during his side's chasing 376 but in vain. This was the 29-year-old all-rounder's first international hundred. [Pak beat Zim in a high-scoring match]

ICC remote match referee Roshan Mahanama also fined Zimbabwean players 40 per cent of their match fees.

The international cricket-governing body said the player pleaded guilty and the subsequent penalties were accepted.

The ICC, however, refused to send its officials to Pakistan owing to security reasons. Pakistan won the two-match T20 series 2-0 before the ODI series. Chigumbura scored his maiden T20 half-century in the first match.
