Emily Petricola Biography

Before her impairment, Em competed in rowing at an elite level. She later transitioned to non-Para track cycling, participating in the 2018 Oceania Championships in Adelaide. Her journey into Para cycling began in 2015 in Ballarat, Victoria.

Inspiration and Support

Em was encouraged to take up cycling by Australian Olympic rower Matt Ryan, who was also her colleague. Ryan devised a plan to help her get back into exercise. They started with a stationary bike in the office. After six months, Ryan suggested she aim for the Tokyo Paralympics.

Coaching and Training

Em's coaches, Shane Kelly and Matt Ryan, played significant roles in her career. Kelly, married to one of Em's friends, agreed to coach her. Both coaches believed in her potential despite the challenges posed by multiple sclerosis.

Achievements

Em's most memorable achievement is winning a gold medal at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. She has also received several awards, including the Para Athlete Award at the 2023 VIS Award of Excellence and Female Para Athlete of the Year at the 2022 AIS Sport Performance Awards.

Em lives by the philosophy of doing her best each day despite any challenges. She finds cycling allows her to feel as normal as possible and taps into her competitive spirit. Her heroes include Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, and she credits her coaches for their significant influence on her career.

Em has worked as a junior rowing programme co-ordinator at Loreto Mandeville Hall Toorak in Australia. She is also pursuing a master's degree in secondary teaching at the University of New England in Armidale.
