123-year-old Mohammedan Sporting Club to shut down; fans call it 'sad', 'gloomy' day

Kolkata, Oct 20: As football fans in India welcomed the birth of a new tournament in Indian Super League (ISL) last week, Monday (October 20) marked the end of one of the country's oldest clubs - Mohammedan Sporting Club.

The 123-year-old Mohammedan Sporting Club in Kolkata has decided to shut down due to financial crisis. Football fans, via Twitter, mourned a 'sad', 'gloomy' day in Indian football after hearing this news.

According to media reports today, the working committee took a decision on Saturday (October 18) to disband the club.

Founded in 1891, Mohammedan Sporting Club is one of the oldest clubs in India. The players had not received their salaries for the last three months, according to reports.

The club's last major titles came in 2013 when it won the Durand Cup and IFA Shield.
