40-Year-Old Manuel Neuer Just Broke a Germany Record That Stood for Decades
Germany's emphatic 7-1 victory over Curaçao in their FIFA World Cup 2026 opener was memorable for more than just the scoreline. Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer etched his name into the history books by becoming the oldest player ever to represent Germany at a major international tournament.
At 40 years old, Neuer surpassed a record that had stood for more than a quarter of a century. The previous mark belonged to German legend Lothar Matthäus, who was 39 years and 91 days old when he appeared against Portugal at UEFA Euro 2000.

The World Cup appearance also marked Neuer's return to the international stage after nearly two years. His last outing for Germany came in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, a defeat to Spain that appeared to bring an end to his international career before a surprise recall from head coach Julian Nagelsmann ahead of the World Cup.
Nagelsmann's decision came after Neuer played a pivotal role in Bayern Munich's Bundesliga-winning campaign and their run to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals last season. Despite battling a calf injury in the build-up to the tournament and missing Germany's warm-up victories over Finland and the United States, the veteran goalkeeper was deemed fit enough to start against Curaçao.
Germany's opener itself quickly turned into a one-sided affair. Felix Nmecha gave the four-time world champions an early lead before Curaçao briefly threatened an upset when Livano Comenencia levelled the scores, sparking wild celebrations among the Caribbean nation's supporters in Houston.
Any hopes of a shock result were swiftly extinguished as Germany responded through Nico Schlotterbeck and Kai Havertz before half-time. Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav added further goals after the break, while Havertz completed his brace late in the match to seal a dominant 7-1 victory.
The result puts Germany in a strong position in Group E ahead of significantly tougher tests against Ecuador and Ivory Coast. After failing to progress beyond the group stage at both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, Julian Nagelsmann's side will view the opening-day win as an important step towards restoring their status among the tournament favourites.
Neuer's return, however, was not without controversy.
The Bayern Munich goalkeeper reportedly attracted attention for allegedly breaching FIFA kit regulations during the match. According to reports, Neuer appeared to have cut the sleeves off his goalkeeper jersey and wore a visible white undershirt underneath that did not match the dominant colour of his playing kit.
FIFA regulations stipulate that visible undergarments must match the primary colour of the jersey and cannot display logos, branding or decorative elements. While the modifications sparked debate online, FIFA has yet to issue any public statement regarding the matter.
For now, though, the focus remains on another remarkable milestone in the career of one of football's greatest goalkeepers. More than two decades after making his professional debut, Neuer has once again found himself making history on the sport's biggest stage.
With Germany's World Cup campaign off to a flying start, the 40-year-old will hope his record-breaking appearance is only the beginning of one final run at international glory.
