“A Very Good Exposure…” Edmund Lalrindika Calls Unity Cup a Crucial ‘Test’ Ahead of India vs Jamaica Semi-final

India face Jamaica in the Unity Cup 2026 semi-final at The Valley, London, on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. Kick-off is at 19:30 BST, which is 00:00 IST on May 28.

The tie marks India’s first match on English soil in 24 years. Their last visit came in 2002, also against Jamaica, in friendlies at Watford and Wolverhampton. Head coach Khalid Jamil leads the team now. The Unity Cup offers early tests against higher-ranked teams.

Unity Cup 2026 India Jamaica Semi-Final

The four-nation tournament features India, Jamaica, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe. Nigeria and Zimbabwe meet in the first semi-final on Tuesday night. Winners play the final on May 30. The remaining teams contest a third-place play-off on the same day. All games take place in London.

India, ranked 136th, enters as an underdog against 71st-ranked Jamaica. Jamaica came within one match of World Cup qualification. They lost to DR Congo in the qualifying play-offs in March. Jamil views the challenge as valuable. He toured England with India in 2000 and 2001.

Jamil said the selection focused on Indian Super League form. “We have selected players who performed well in the ISL,” he said on Monday. “Based on that, we will continue to build the team. Whoever performs well gets selected.” His message centres on merit and performance.

Squad arrivals and preparation after the ISL season

The Indian Super League season ended only days ago. East Bengal FC were crowned champions. Indian players, therefore,e arrive with match fitness and rhythm. Jamil believes the Unity Cup can help several players cement international roles. The tournament timing suits their current physical readiness.

The Blue Tigers reached London on May 24 with 17 players. Mohun Bagan SG players withdrew before departure. Goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari joined a day later. Midfielder Macarton Nickson and defender Nikhil Barla received call-ups. Both reached the camp on Tuesday ahead of the semi-final.

Forward Edmund Lalrindika sees the event as a key test. “This is a very good exposure for us and a great experience. It is an opportunity to test ourselves against higher-ranked teams. We will try our best to get positive results,” the 27-year-old said.

Lalrindika also addressed fans living in Britain. “To all the Indian fans, I hope they come in big numbers and support us,” he said. India’s return to the United Kingdom carries both nostalgia and a sense of progress. Players are keen to measure development against Jamaica.

Coaches’ plans and Jamaica’s young squad

Jamil underlined the need for a steady approach. “It is very good for us to be here and play in this tournament. Jamaica's definitely a stronger team, but we will try our best to do well,” he said. He stressed a focus on the opening match.

“It is important for us to make a good start. We are focused on the opening match. Then we will think about the next game. We want to go step by step,” Jamil added. His comments highlight a simple plan. Performance comes one match at a time.

Jamaica brings one of the youngest squads to the event. Their average age is 22.8 years. Head coach Rudolph Speid said several seniors rested after long seasons. Yet he trusts this group, which includes 11 players based in England. That local experience may help.

Speid named some experienced figures in his squad. They include captain and defender Damion Lowe and right-back Dexter Lembikisa. Defender Joel Latibeaudiere, a 2017 FIFA U17 World Cup winner with England in India, also features. Midfielder Isaac Hayden adds further experience in central areas.

“We are confident,” said Speid. “We have a lot of young, talented players to choose from, and we thought having a good mixture was the right thing to do this time.” Jamaica previously reached the Unity Cup final last year, losing to Nigeria on penalties.

Speid said Jamaica wants to improve on last year’s finish. “We have studied all three teams, and we are impressed by what we have seen. Last time we enjoyed reaching the final against Nigeria, and this year we aim to go one step further and win the tournament,” he said.

The coach admitted India remains hard to read. “India is a difficult team to assess because we have not played them at this level for a very long time. We have watched some of their matches, but they are still somewhat unknown to us. We will focus on playing our game,” Speid added.

Jamaica defender Damion Lowe noted the event’s wider importance. “The excitement around the tournament is amazing, especially from the diaspora communities. Jamaica has ties with India and African nations, so it is special,” said the 33-year-old, who plays for Indonesian club Dewa United Banten.
