Aaron Ramsey Joins Pumas UNAM On One-Year Deal After Leaving Cardiff City

Wales captain Aaron Ramsey has signed a one-year contract with Liga MX club Pumas UNAM after departing Cardiff City. He aims to make an impact in the Mexican league following his managerial stint at Cardiff.

Aaron Ramsey, the captain of Wales, has joined Liga MX's Pumas UNAM on a one-year deal after leaving Cardiff City. The midfielder, who played for Arsenal from 2008 to 2019 and won three FA Cups, became a free agent when his contract with Cardiff ended. Ramsey returned to his childhood club in 2023 and briefly managed them at the end of the 2024-25 season but couldn't prevent their relegation.

Instead of pursuing a managerial path, Ramsey opted to continue playing in Mexico's top league. Upon joining Pumas, he expressed enthusiasm about the move: "I've played with some players who understand the Mexican league and had conversations in the past with them. This league is very technical, great players have been produced, the national team is very good. I'm really excited by the challenge."

Aaron Ramsey Signs with Pumas UNAM

Pumas last claimed the Mexican championship in 2011 and concluded their 2024-25 season in 10th place during the Clausura. They are set to begin their 2025-26 campaign against Santos Laguna on July 12. Ramsey aims to contribute significantly to Pumas' ambitions this season.

Ramsey has not represented Wales since September 2024 but remains hopeful of leading them to the 2026 World Cup hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Wales currently holds second place in their qualifying group, trailing North Macedonia by one point. Belgium is three points behind but has two games in hand.

Reflecting on his career experiences, Ramsey believes they position him well for future challenges. He stated, "I've experienced a lot of things in my career and that puts me in a good place going forward." He acknowledges the expectations at Pumas and is committed to helping achieve their goals this season.

Cardiff confirmed Ramsey's departure in June. Despite his brief stint as interim manager following Omer Riza's exit, he chose not to pursue management further at this time. Instead, he looks forward to making an impact on the field with Pumas UNAM.

As Ramsey embarks on this new chapter with Pumas UNAM, both club and player are eager for success. His experience and leadership could be pivotal as they strive for better results in the upcoming season.
