Nicolae Stanciu sent a stoppage-time penalty over the bar as Genoa drew 1-1 with AC Milan at San Siro, denying Genoa a dramatic away win in Serie A on Thursday and leaving Milan three points behind leaders Inter after a tense, open contest.

The decisive late twist followed a frantic spell. Davide Bartesaghi tripped Mikael Ellertsson deep into added time, giving Genoa a penalty moments after Rafael Leao’s close-range header had levelled the match, cancelling Lorenzo Colombo’s 28th-minute strike for the visitors, who are still fighting near the bottom.

Milan had already created several big chances before the late chaos. Matteo Gabbia struck the frame of the goal twice, while Niclas Fullkrug almost settled the match with a chance shortly before the Genoa counter-attack that ended with the spot-kick, underlining how strongly the home side pushed forward.

Genoa, despite sitting in a relegation battle, extended a useful sequence at San Siro. This was a third straight Serie A draw away to Milan, and it is the first time since the period between 1976 and 1981 that Genoa have gone three consecutive league visits to Milan unbeaten.

Milan controlled most attacking metrics, recording 55 touches in Genoa’s box and allowing only 14. The hosts produced 32 attempts worth 2.34 expected goals, compared with seven efforts and 1.32 xG for Genoa, whose season-long penalty issues continued, with three of four Serie A spot-kicks now missed.

On the touchline, an animated Daniele De Rossi and Massimiliano Allegri, taking charge of a 200th Milan match across two spells, watched their teams share the points. Milan lost ground in the title race, while Genoa’s penalty miss meant a valuable, if frustrating, draw in the fight against relegation.
