AC Milan's Sergio Conceicao Emphasises Winning Motivation Over Spoiling Inter's Treble Ambitions

Sergio Conceicao states that AC Milan's motivation for the Coppa Italia is rooted in their own performance rather than disrupting Inter's treble hopes. With both teams vying for success, Milan aims to reclaim their status in Italian football.

Sergio Conceicao emphasised that AC Milan's drive to win the Coppa Italia is not about hindering Inter's treble aspirations. Milan, currently ninth in Serie A, are out of the Champions League and unlikely to qualify for next season. In contrast, Inter lead the domestic league and have reached the semi-finals of Europe's top club competition.

Conceicao acknowledged Inter's achievements, stating, "I congratulate Inter for the Champions League and the championship, this shows its strength." However, he stressed that Milan's focus is on winning the upcoming match to reach the final and secure a trophy for their fans. The Coppa Italia semi-final second leg against Inter is crucial, especially after a 1-1 draw in the first leg.

AC Milan Focuses on Winning, Not Spoiling Inter

The manager clarified that Milan's motivation stems from their daily efforts rather than their opponents. "The motivation does not come from the opponent, but from our work day-by-day," Conceicao told reporters. With no more opportunities in Serie A or the Champions League this season, their attention is solely on Wednesday's game.

Despite recent struggles, Conceicao understands Milan's expectations. "It's an important match for everyone, players, clubs and fans," he noted. For a club like Milan, reaching the Coppa Italia final should be standard practice. They must compete for titles like the Scudetto and Champions League regularly.

Milan defender Kyle Walker and midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek are set to return against Inter. Walker suffered an elbow fracture two weeks ago while Loftus-Cheek was recovering from appendicitis. Conceicao confirmed both players' availability: "Walker has been training with the team... But both he and Loftus-Cheek will be there."

Milan have defeated Inter twice this season, including in the Supercoppa Italiana final. However, their last two encounters ended in draws—the first time since 2016-17. Bologna leads Empoli 3-0 in another semi-final with its second leg scheduled for Thursday.

A Tribute to Pope Francis

Conceicao began his press conference by paying tribute to Pope Francis who passed away on Monday. He described him as "an extraordinary man" and shared his personal routine of attending Mass daily at 6:30 pm in central Milan. "We will miss his words and his gaze," said Conceicao.

The significance of this match extends beyond just trophies for Milan; it represents a chance to restore pride amidst a challenging season. While acknowledging Inter’s success, Conceicao remains focused on achieving victory for Milan’s supporters.
