AC Milan Top Four Ambitions Under Allegri As Lazio Clash Tests Progress

Massimiliano Allegri emphasises Milan must win five more Serie A matches to guarantee a top-four place, despite recent form against Inter. The Lazio fixture poses a stern test as Milan chase consistent results to maintain Champions League qualification, with Inter leading and room for improvement behind them.

AC Milan visit Lazio targeting another key Serie A win, as Massimiliano Allegri downplays talk about the Scudetto and focuses on locking in a Champions League place, with Milan sitting second, eight points behind Inter and nine clear of Roma before kick-off in Rome.

Allegri’s side reach the match on 60 points from 28 league games, chasing a points total that has been bettered only twice in their last 20 Serie A seasons after 29 fixtures, when Milan collected 63 points in both 2011-12 and 2021-22.

AC Milan top four focus as Lazio looms

Allegri stressed that Milan’s main objective stays qualification for the Champions League, even after cutting Inter’s lead with the derby win that trimmed the gap between the rivals to seven points, before Inter’s draw with Atalanta took it back to eight ahead of Milan’s visit to Lazio.

Roma, in fifth, trail Milan by nine points and battle Juventus and Como for the final Champions League slot, which keeps the pressure on Allegri, who believes a specific target is needed to stay ahead of the chasing pack in the Serie A standings.

The coach explained the squad’s mindset after beating Inter, while underlining that more work is required and that the focus must remain on steady progress rather than talk of the Scudetto at this stage of the campaign. "Were all happy after the last game and rightly so, but the team returned to a calm state," he said. "Now weve got Lazio, though, which is always a complicated game because [Maurizio] Sarris sides are difficult to face. For us its an important game because we want to take another step forwards. We have to try and win games because you dont get anywhere with just 60 points. Inter have a seven-point advantage, theyve shown us that theyre the best and the strongest. There are also teams behind us chasing. We have to win more games to reach a certain quota. We have to win five more games to get into the top four."

Recent form between these clubs points towards an AC Milan win, with Milan unbeaten in seven of the last nine Serie A meetings against Lazio, recording six victories and one draw, and losing only twice in that run, in January 2023 by 4-0 and March 2025 by 2-1.

Milan have scored in 25 of the previous 27 league clashes against Lazio, producing 43 goals across those games, which gives an average of roughly 1.6 goals per match, while their last visit to the Stadio Olimpico, in August 2024, ended in a 2-2 draw after another open contest.

Lazio’s home pattern against Milan is unusually varied, as they have not produced the same result in any of the last 12 Serie A matches between the sides in Rome, with both clubs recording four wins, four draws and four defeats during that streak in the capital.

Milan beat Cremonese and Inter without conceding and can now earn three straight Serie A wins with clean sheets for the first time since September, while Lazio ended a seven-game run without victory against higher-placed opponents when defeating Sassuolo 2-1 in their most recent such fixture.

The Opta win probability model gives AC Milan the edge for this match, projecting a 47.9% chance of an away victory, compared with 25.6% for a Lazio success and a 26.5% likelihood of a draw, reinforcing the view that Milan start as favourites in Rome.

AC Milan vs Lazio players to watch in Serie A

Rafael Leao has an outstanding personal record against Lazio, as the Milan forward is one of only two Serie A opponents, along with Hellas Verona, against which Leao has recorded at least three goals and three assists in the league, with three goals and four assists versus Lazio.

Leao’s impact has been consistent in recent clashes, because the Portugal international has been directly involved in five goals across his last five Serie A appearances against Lazio, scoring twice and delivering three assists, making Leao a central attacking threat for Allegri’s plan.

On the Lazio side, Daniel Maldini carries a unique story into this Serie A meeting, having scored for five different clubs in the competition after his goal against Sassuolo for Lazio, adding to previous league strikes with Milan in 2021-22, plus Cosenza, Spezia and Empoli.

Maldini sits in a small group of modern Serie A players, as one of only two footballers born in or after 2001 to have scored for at least five different teams in the competition, alongside Roberto Piccoli, who has found the net for six separate clubs in Italy’s top flight.

With Milan chasing five more wins to secure a top-four finish and Lazio seeking another upset after beating Sassuolo, the match in Rome brings together different aims, yet both sides carry strong motivation as the Serie A season moves into a decisive phase for Champions League qualification.
