AFC Asian Cup 2023: What Are India's Qualification Chances After Uzbekistan Defeat?

India went into their second AFC Asian Cup 2023 match with high hopes to win. Their hopes shattered in the very first half when Uzbekistan went 0-3 up. The Blue Tigers couldn't come back from that and lost.

The Indian football team drew the short end of the stick when their first match was set against Australia. India fought bravely even though there were only hopes of drawing the match against the Asian giants.

However, India still lost the match 0-2 against the Socceroos. This means they have 0 points from their first 2 matches. With that, they are sitting at the bottom of the Group B table behind Syria with 1 point.

The way to the knockout stages is extremely steep now. Nothing less than a win will do for them to progress to the next stage. However, considering how valiantly Syria fought against Australia in their second match, that will be hard to achieve for the Blue Tigers.

India’s AFC Asian Cup 2023 knockout stages qualification scenarios -

  • If India win their last AFC Asian Cup 2023 match against Syria, they will accumulate 3 points from their 3 group stage matches. Even so, they will not be able to get into the top 2 positions.
  • Uzbekistan will play their last match against Australia. If Uzbekistan lose in that match and India win against Syria, then the two teams will end up with the same points. In that case, as per rules, head-to-head records will be considered.

Hence, Uzbekistan will automatically earn the 2nd position in the Group B table. In that case, India will have to wait for the end of all group stage matches. They will only qualify for the next stage if they are one of the top 4 teams of the 6 groups’ 3rd-placed teams.

If India draw against Syria, they will have 1 and Syria will have 2 points. If they lose, then Syria will have 4 and India will end the group stage with 0 points. In both cases, India will not qualify.
