India started their AFC Asian Cup 2023 with a 0-2 loss to Australia. They needed to win in their next 2 games to seal their place in the knockout stages. However, that plan went awry as they took on Uzbekistan.
With the determination to win the game, coach Igor Stimac lined up an attacking side. However, in doing so, the defense fumbled and most players failed to impress. India lost 0-3 against the White Wolves.

Nikhil Poojary
Nikhil Poojary did his best in India's first AFC Asian Cup 2023 match. He also has a good sense of moving up to the final third when needed. Hence, his start in the right full-back position was a given.
However, it didn't work well against Uzbekistan. Nikhil Poojary looked clueless in the match. When he left his post to move up in the match, Jaloliddin Masharipov found the space to attack and Poojary then found it hard to track back and defend.
Sandesh Jhingan
Coach Igor Stimac had little reinforcement with the defensive prowess. Hence, Sandesh Jhingan needed to be the leader in the backline to guide his teammates. However, same as Poojary, Sandesh Jhingan looked just as clueless.
He took to the field with scars from their game against Australia. However, unlike their first AFC Asian Cup 2023 match, Jhingan made many mistakes including some dangerous ones in India's box. Considering how Uzbekistan were lurking inside, it could have costed India dearly.
Manvir Singh
Manvir Singh only played the first half of the match. At the start of the second half, coach Igor Stimac replaced him with Rahul KP who had a good impact on the game. Manvir’s mistakes were evident, but he cannot be blamed for them entirely.
Manvir Singh does not excel in defending. However, when Poojary moved up the field to attack, Manvir had to fill his space and figure out how to operate in a position where he had no experience. As a result, he failed to impress.
