AFC U20 Asian Cup Qualifiers: India U-20 Beat 10-Man Mongolia 4-1 in Opening Group Match

By MyKhel Staff

India opened its AFC U20 Asian Cup Qualifiers campaign with an impressive 4-1 victory over Mongolia on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, in Vientiane, Laos. The win came through a dominant second-half performance, securing three crucial points for the Indian side as they aim to qualify in a challenging group with Iran in it.

India began the match on the front foot, breaking the deadlock in the 20th minute when Kelvin Singh scored directly from a corner, registering an "Olympic goal" that put his team in the lead.

Their aggressive start to the match forced Mongolia into a defensive stance, and in the 29th minute, Mongolia was reduced to 10 men following a red card for a reckless challenge. This seemed to tilt the game even further in India's favour.

However, despite India's numerical advantage, Mongolia equalised with a late injury-time goal in the first half, making it 1-1 at halftime. The equaliser briefly put pressure on India but they quickly regained control after the break.

India's second-half resurgence was led by Kipgen, who scored twice in quick succession. His first came just six minutes after the restart, giving India a 2-1 lead. He doubled his tally in the 53rd minute, extending India's advantage to 3-1. Kipgen's brace not only restored India's dominance but also helped calm any nerves that had emerged after Mongolia's late first-half goal.

As the game wore on, India continued to apply pressure, ensuring Mongolia struggled to make any inroads. In the 85th minute, Koeou scored India's fourth goal, sealing the match with an emphatic 4-1 scoreline. This goal will be significant for India's goal difference, which could prove crucial in the group standings.

Looking ahead, India faces a difficult challenge against Iran on September 27, a match that could be pivotal for their qualification hopes. Iran is expected to be a tough opponent, and India will need to be at their best. However, with momentum from this convincing win over Mongolia, India will hope to continue their strong form.

India's final group stage game will be against host nation Laos on September 29. Securing another big win in that match will be key to their qualification hopes, especially if they aim to finish among the top second-placed teams.
