The Indian football team returns to action since their AFC Asian Cup debacle as they take on Afghanistan in the Group A match of the Joint FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers in Abha on Thursday night.
India lost their last match in the qualifiers to group leaders and Asian Champions Qatar but a victory over Kuwait away before has put them in a strong position to finish second in the group. A positive result or at least a draw tonight will increase their chances.
Afghanistan, meanwhile, is seated at the bottom of the Group A table. They have almost little chance of winning any of their next matches because of these numerous issues. They will, nevertheless, continue to make every effort to make things better.
Thus far, India and Afghanistan have engaged in 11 senior-level matches. With seven victories, India has largely dominated these matches. Only two years have passed since their last match, which took place in June of the AFC Asian Cup and was won by India 2-1.
Third position in the Group A standings belongs to the Indian football team. In the AFC Asian Cup in January, the Blue Tigers were eliminated as soon as they managed to score even one goal or accumulate one point.
They will therefore be driven to seize this chance to win this game and earn all three points. Igor Stimac, India's head coach, has repeatedly stated that his team will go to the third round of the World Cup qualifying.
The football squad from Afghanistan does not have a good record. Out of the previous 13 games, they have only won twice. In the first round of World Cup qualifying, both victories came against Mongolia. They were unable to earn a spot in the most recent AFC Asian Cup.
Thus, they haven't played a game since November of last year. Added to that, the players are the federation of the country are in a dispute that has seen several key players boycott all of their World Cup qualifiers matches so far. They will therefore need to work very hard to advance.
