World Cup qualifiers, Afghanistan vs India: What are India's Third Round Qualification Chances?

India will face Afghanistan in their third match of the World Cup qualifiers second round. They have won one game against Kuwait, and lost one against Qatar so far. With that, they are sitting in the third position in the Group A table.

The Indian football team will need to get into the top two positions to qualify for the third round. Coach Igor Stimac has said time and again that he is determined to take India to the third round of the qualifiers.

He will make history if he succeeds in his endeavour, but the road will not be easy. The Blue Tigers have two back-to-back matches against Afghanistan. Their first target is getting all six points from two consecutive wins in these two matches.

If they win in both matches, they should end up with nine points in 2nd place in the group table. Qatar will play two matches against Kuwait and it's unlikely that Kuwait will be able to win both matches against the superpower that is Qatar.

Two wins against Afghanistan won't guarantee a place for India in the third round. However, it gives them an advantage. If Kuwait fail to get any point in the two matches against Qatar, they will have to win both matches against India and Afghanistan in their next two matches.

In that case, if they manage to get two wins against India and Afghanistan, it all will come down to the goal difference between India and Kuwait. The scenario doesn't change much if India even earn four points from these next two matches.

However, then the situation becomes a bit harder for India. They will have the pressure to at least get even one point from that match. Otherwise, in the worst case, Kuwait will end up with nine points in 2nd place and India will end up with seven points in 3rd place.
