African legends hail Salah as one of the best

The Egyptian's sensational form, netting 22 Premier League goals already this season, has seen fellow African Player of the Year winners Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o and El Hadji Diouf laud him.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah

Bengaluru, February 13: One of Africa's all-time greatest players Samuel Eto'o has rated Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah right up there with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Fellow legends Didier Drogba and El Hadji Diouf have also shared the same opinion.

The Liverpool forward had massive question marks over him when he arrived at Anfield but he has silenced his doubters in stunning fashion so far.

The Egyptian's sensational form, netting 22 Premier League goals already this season, has seen fellow African Player of the Year winners Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o and El Hadji Diouf compare him to the best players in the world.

Cameroon icon Eto’o said: “He has probably been one of the best players in the world.

“His performances for Liverpool have been great and, for me, I am always glad to see African players at the top level.

“He deserves his award and hopefully he has more years like this.”

The 25-year-old looked like he had a one-way ticket out of the Premier League when he flopped at Chelsea.

He was loaned to Fiorentina and Roma and there were doubts over the Reds’ £34.3million move for him in the summer when he was signed from AS Roma.

Meanwhile, Ivory Coast legend Drogba reckons Jurgen Klopp is the right manager for Salah.

While together at Chelsea, he saw the Egyptian’s talent but the winger did not have the faith of then-boss Jose Mourinho.

The 39-year-old said: “He has always been a good player. We all knew he had it in him.“Maybe now he works with managers who are more willing to give him more responsibility.

“If you look with his national team too, he is maybe the biggest player they have.

“In Italy, he did very well with a big club and now he has gone to England and he is doing even better. He has been fantastic.”

The Egyptian's sensational form has seen him linked with a move to Spain.

Real Madrid are keeping tabs on him with Cristiano Ronaldo coming towards the end of his career.

Drogba said, said: “I think he has got it in him. He is someone who you will respect if you share a dressing room with him.

“You expect a captain to put all the players together and you can see he does that.

“He seems quiet but being quiet does not mean he is not a leader. He leads by example.”

Eto’o also believes Salah could rise to the challenge of playing with the armband.

He said: “He will not scream at you to do this or do that but people like him command respect.

“His attitude off the pitch also makes him a natural leader. He can grow into a captain there.”
