AIFF announces Super Cup to start within Six Weeks, gives huge update on ISL after FSDL meeting

By MyKhel Staff

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) convened with Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) and representatives from ISL clubs on August 7, 2025, in New Delhi to discuss pressing issues facing Indian football amid the ongoing uncertainty over the Indian Super League (ISL).

And on Thursday (August 14), AIFF has announced that the Indian Super League may finally start, but not before a stipulated time period.

AIFF announces Super Cup to start within Six Weeks gives huge update on ISL after FSDL meeting

These official minutes, shared by AIFF on social media, offer direct insight into the decisions made and the motivations behind them. It is confirmed now that the Kalinga Super Cup will be held before the ISL, and it may commence from late September.

1. ISL Start Date Depends on Supreme Court Verdict, but can start within 60 days of Decision

The start of the Indian Super League (ISL) remains uncertain, pending a Supreme Court judgment. AIFF officials clarified that the season's kickoff date can only be finalized after the legal verdict is delivered, as regulatory and administrative changes might be required post-judgment. Clubs and organizers are planning for roughly 60 days of preparation time after the verdict.

2. Super Cup to start in Six Weeks

Organisers plan to bring forward the Super Cup, proposing it be held six weeks from the meeting date. However, the exact schedule will be confirmed within 7-10 days. Advancing the Super Cup fills the competitive window left by the ISL's uncertainty. It keeps teams engaged and fans invested while waiting for the ISL's resumption.

3. Club Licensing Strictness

'AIFF insists on strict compliance with AFC (Asian Football Confederation)-aligned statutes for club licensing, with no dilution allowed.'

AIFF has upheld technical, financial, and structural standards mandated by continental governing bodies, intended to boost professionalism and credibility in Indian football.

4. Youth Leagues: Cost-Cutting and Restructuring

'Clubs voiced concern over youth league costs; the AIFF suggested restructuring league formats to minimize travel and expenses.'

Explanation: The proposal aims to maintain active youth development programs while making them financially sustainable, important for the grassroots growth of the sport.

5. Player Availability for National Team

Clubs unanimously agreed to release players for national team duties whenever requested. This consensus prioritizes the national interest, ensuring India fields its best talent for international competition without club-versus-country conflict.

6. Next Meeting Timeline

Another meeting is scheduled in 7-10 days to finalize the Super Cup schedule and further review ISL start plans, the AIFF confirmed. This ensures agile decision-making as new developments arise, particularly the Supreme Court's pending verdict.

Why Is the ISL Delayed?

The delay in the ISL's start is primarily because the AIFF and ISL stakeholders are awaiting a Supreme Court judgment, which could have direct implications on league operations-potentially involving club licensing, governance standards, or eligibility criteria. The league's start date will only be set after digesting the verdict, allowing all clubs 60 days of preparation thereafter.
