AIFF to make Super Cup a 16 Team affair

New Delhi, Jan 25: All India Football Federation (AIFF) is ready to introduce the much-awaited Super Cup tournament with a total of 16 teams from ISL and I League, according to reports.

With the addition of ISL as an official AIFF tournament from this season, India saw their two top-tier leagues, ISL and I League running simultaneously.

Earlier, the Federation cup rules only allow teams from I League but to have a national-level knockout tournament, it was necessary to include teams from the two leagues.

Thus, to ease the matter, the Indian Federation board has allegedly taken up such a step and decided to merge teams from the two leagues.

And now as per reports, the Super Cup is slated to replace the Federation Cup from this season and could see the top-six teams each from the ISL and I-League vie for the trophy whereas the remaining four slots will be loaded after holding a qualifying tournament between the bottom-placed four teams each from the two leagues.

The tournament will start following the conclusion of ISL and I League which will end on March 17 and March 7 respectively and after India's friendly against Kyrgyzstan on March 27.

The Super Cup is slated for last week of March in 2018 which will saw teams playing in the qualifying round and reportedly the main tournament will commence in the month of April. However, the setup of the tournament has not been declared yet.

The main venue for the tournament is likely to stay between Guwahati and Kochi stadium.
