Spain's Aitana Bonmati is currently hospitalised with viral meningitis, just days before the Euro 2025 tournament begins. Bonmati, who has twice won the Ballon d'Or Feminin and was awarded the Golden Ball during Spain's 2023 World Cup victory, is a key player for the team. Her participation in the upcoming matches against Portugal, Belgium, and Italy in Group B is now uncertain.
On Friday, Bonmati shared an Instagram photo of herself watching Spain's 3-1 friendly win over Japan from her hospital bed. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) later confirmed her diagnosis. They stated: "After the medical tests carried out on the international Aitana Bonmati, the FC Barcelona and Spanish National Team player has been diagnosed with viral meningitis, pending evolution."

The RFEF also noted that due to her condition, Bonmati was unable to participate in Friday's preparatory match against Japan at Butarque Stadium in Leganes. Despite her absence, Spain secured a victory with goals from Claudia Pina, Vicky Lopez, and Athenea del Castillo.
Following Spain's triumph over Japan, coach Montse Tome addressed concerns about Bonmati's health. "Talking about meningitis can be scary but it is controlled," she said. "She is a very important player for us. We'll wait for her as long as we can." This statement reflects the team's hope for her swift recovery.
Bonmati's availability for Spain’s opening match against Portugal on July 3 remains doubtful. However, there is optimism within the team that she might recover in time to play against Belgium on July 7 or Italy four days later.
The situation surrounding Bonmati highlights both the challenges and resilience faced by athletes at major tournaments. Her health will be closely monitored as Spain prepares for their Euro 2025 campaign.
