Aizawl FC give up IFL Rights as Nagaland United acquire 2nd tier License, Aizawl to play in Mizo League

A major change is taking shape in Indian football, with Aizawl FC set to exit the Indian Football League after the club's owners agreed to transfer their IFL rights to Nagaland United.

According to information accessed by MyKhel, the former I-League champions have effectively stepped away from their IFL operation, with financial difficulties understood to be the primary reason behind the decision.

Nagaland United set for IFL debut

Nagaland United Sports Club are now in line to take over the rights and potentially represent Nagaland in the country's second tier, although formal approval from the All India Football Federation (AIFF) remains the crucial step.

The proposed transfer was first reported earlier this month, with Nagaland United reaching an agreement with Aizawl FC's owners. The Nagaland Football Association has also communicated the proposed change to the AIFF. If approved, Nagaland United are expected to play their home matches in Dimapur, and will become the first team from the state of Nagaland to feature in 2nd tier Indian football.

Aizawl FC to play in Local Leagues

The development does not mean the end of Aizawl FC. The Mizoram club will continue its football activities in the state, including participation in the Mizoram Premier League (MPL). The club is also expected to focus increasingly on youth development and its academy structure. Aizawl are already part of the ongoing MPL season.

Founded in 1984, Aizawl became the first club from the Northeast to win the I-League when they lifted the title in the 2016-17 season under Khalid Jamil, producing one of the most memorable underdog stories in Indian football. They had previously won the I-League 2 title in 2015.

However, sustaining a national-level operation has become increasingly difficult financially. Rather than disappearing altogether, Aizawl are now set to concentrate on the local football ecosystem while surrendering their place in the IFL.

For Nagaland United, meanwhile, the proposed takeover could represent a landmark moment. The club, founded in 2024, has quickly established itself in Nagaland's football structure and now has the opportunity to step onto the national stage.

The 2026-27 IFL season is scheduled to begin on October 16, meaning the AIFF's decision on the transfer will be crucial in determining whether Nagaland United can make their national debut this season.
