Manuel Akanji Set To Miss Up To 10 Weeks For Manchester City Following Surgery On Thigh Injury

Manuel Akanji is expected to be out for up to 10 weeks after undergoing surgery for a thigh injury. The Swiss defender's absence comes as Manchester City faces defensive challenges this season.

Pep Guardiola has announced that Manuel Akanji will be sidelined for up to 10 weeks due to a thigh injury that requires surgery. Akanji sustained this injury during Manchester City's 3-2 loss to Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League play-off on Tuesday. The Swiss defender, who has played 20 Premier League matches this season, will undergo surgery on Saturday.

Akanji's absence is a significant blow to City's defence, which has already faced challenges this season. The team has recorded higher expected goals against (xGA) totals in only two other seasons under Guardiola: 2019-20 and 2023-24. This season's xGA stands at 34.6, highlighting defensive vulnerabilities.

Akanji Out for Up to 10 Weeks After Surgery

Guardiola expressed his admiration for Akanji's contributions, stating, "The effort he has done this season has been unbelievable." He praised both Akanji and Nathan Ake for their performances under challenging conditions, noting their versatility in playing different roles when needed.

The injury list at Manchester City includes several key players. John Stones, Nathan Ake, and Ruben Dias have recently returned from injuries. Additionally, Jack Grealish was forced off the field against Real Madrid with an injury. Guardiola mentioned that Grealish's condition is less severe than Akanji's but remains uncertain for the upcoming match against Newcastle United.

In the Premier League, Akanji has been a crucial player for City. He ranks third in blocks made with eight and second in regaining possession with 86 recoveries, only behind Josko Gvardiol's 89. His absence will be felt as City navigates through their fixtures without him.

Guardiola remains hopeful for Akanji's recovery, saying, "We only wish the best recovery for Manu [Akanji]." The manager acknowledged the physical toll on players like Akanji and Ake who have stepped up in emergencies and adapted to various positions when required.

As City prepares for their next Premier League match against Newcastle United, they must adapt to these recent setbacks. Guardiola's squad depth will be tested as they aim to maintain their competitive edge despite these challenges.
