Al-Ahli Secures 3-2 Victory Against Al-Shabab With Ivan Toney's Early Goal

In a thrilling encounter, Al-Ahli defeated Al-Shabab 3-2, with Ivan Toney scoring early. The win places Al-Ahli fifth in the Saudi Pro League, three points ahead of their rivals.

Ivan Toney found the net for the first time in six Saudi Pro League matches, aiding Al-Ahli to a tense 3-2 win over Al-Shabab. This victory pushed Matthias Jaissle's team three points ahead of their opponents, securing fifth place in the standings. Despite this, they remain 10 points behind league leaders Al-Ittihad.

Al-Ahli took an early lead when Riyad Mahrez capitalised on a midfield error, delivering a cross that Toney headed past Abdullah Al Muaiouf. Shortly after, Roberto Firmino set up Gabri Veiga with a precise pass, allowing him to score and double the advantage.

Al-Ahli Beats Al-Shabab 3-2 in Thriller

Saad Yaslam seemed to seal the win by scoring two minutes into the second half. He followed up on Toney’s header that hit the post. However, an own-goal by Merih Demiral gave Al-Shabab hope. The Tunisian defender accidentally turned Musab Al Juwayr's cross into his own net.

In stoppage time, Al Juwayr flicked Robert Renan's cross into the goal, threatening a comeback. Yet, Al-Shabab could not find an equaliser. This result marked Al-Ahli's fifth consecutive league win, equalling their total wins from the previous 11 games.

Gabri Veiga was instrumental for Al-Ahli, achieving a team-high expected goals (xG) of 1.59 out of their total 4.33. He also created more chances than any other player on the field with four key passes.

Their recent form suggests that Al-Ahli might be gearing up for a late title challenge given their squad's quality. However, Al-Shabab's late surge served as a reminder of the competition they face.

This winning streak is significant for Al-Ahli as it mirrors their performance from September to October 2018 when they last won five consecutive top-flight matches.
