Alisson Becker Departure Would Be A Big Blow For Liverpool, Says Virgil Van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk accepts that Liverpool would suffer a major setback if Alisson leaves Anfield in the upcoming summer transfer window, stressing the influence of the Brazil international on and off the pitch while also insisting that Liverpool must be ready to adjust if such a departure finally happens.

Speculation has linked Alisson, Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson with possible exits after this season, increasing uncertainty around Liverpool’s senior core, yet Van Dijk has underlined that any decision about Alisson’s future has not been communicated, and that Liverpool will respond collectively if a change eventually occurs.

Alisson departure would hit Liverpool

Van Dijk explained that discussions about departures are inevitable at an elite club but made clear that Alisson’s situation remains unresolved, saying: "Listen, there is always going to be a day when yougo, Van Dijk said, as reported by ESPN. But if it's going to happen, and I have no idea about it and I don't think, at this point, he has an idea about it,then we will, as a club, adapt to that."

The Liverpool captain spoke about the shared experiences within the squad and highlighted Alisson’s emotional importance to the group, stating: "We have been through everything together, positive things and some negative things unfortunately as well, so it would definitely be a big blow and a miss but I don't think, for me, it's a good idea to think ahead about what could or could not happen."

Since arriving from Roma in 2018, Alisson has been central to Liverpool’s trophy haul, contributing to two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the EFL Cup and the FA Cup, while amassing 254 Premier League appearances and posting a 72.1% save rate, bettered only by Hugo Lloris and David Raya among goalkeepers with at least 50 games in that span.

Alisson’s clean-sheet record also underlines the consistency, with 103 Premier League shutouts since the beginning of the 2018-19 campaign, which places the Brazil international only behind Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, who has recorded 106 in the same period across league fixtures.

The 33-year-old has featured 34 times for Liverpool in all competitions during the current season despite injury spells, and those absences have increased concern among supporters about both fitness and long-term future, especially with speculation already building around how Liverpool might eventually replace such a reliable figure in goal.

Alisson Liverpool goalkeeper leadership and current focus

Van Dijk emphasised Alisson’s leadership value as much as technical quality, describing the Brazilian goalkeeper as vital in the dressing room and on the pitch, adding: "He's very important for me as one of the leaders in the team and I think he is very important on the pitch because I think he is thebest goalkeeper in the world."

For Van Dijk, short-term goals take priority over transfer speculation, with the defender explaining the current situation around Alisson’s fitness and the team’s run-in: "He's trying to be back as soon as possible to help us for the last four games and that's our main focus. Whatever happens after that is not something you should ask me," he added.

Van Dijk then made personal feelings about Alisson’s future clear but maintained a calm stance regarding rumours, saying: "Would I love him to stay? Of course, there's no doubt about that. Everyone can feel a certain way about it. There are rumours but if there is anything concrete then we will all find out but, for me, I'm never worried."

Liverpool currently sit fifth in the Premier League after an inconsistent season by recent standards, yet the team remains close to securing Champions League qualification, with a crucial fixture against long-term rivals Manchester United on Sunday likely to shape both final league position and the mood surrounding Alisson’s situation.
