Allegri Downplays AC Milan's Coppa Italia Exit Amid Strong Serie A Performance

AC Milan's manager, Massimiliano Allegri, expressed that their early departure from the Coppa Italia should not be seen as a setback for the team. Despite being finalists in the 2024-25 season, Milan was eliminated in the last 16 by Lazio. Mattia Zaccagni's header in the 80th minute secured a 1-0 victory for Lazio on Thursday.

Allegri remains optimistic about Milan's prospects in Serie A, where they currently lead on goal difference over Napoli. He acknowledged the disappointment of being knocked out but emphasised looking ahead to upcoming Serie A matches and the Supercoppa Italiana. "No, absolutely not. Look, it's right to be angry, because an elimination in a knockout round is disappointing," Allegri told Sport Mediaset.

The match against Lazio featured limited scoring opportunities. Lazio managed only 0.55 expected goals (xG) from their 11 attempts, while Milan generated chances worth 0.97 xG. Allegri noted that Milan faced more difficulties compared to their previous encounter with Lazio, which they won by the same scoreline.

Allegri highlighted some issues during the game, stating that misplaced passes in the first half led to unnecessary chances for Lazio. "Lazio won a game where we had more difficulties compared to Saturday, as we misplaced passes a few times in the first half to gift chances," he added.

The decisive moment came from a corner kick that Milan failed to defend effectively. Allegri pointed out that this lapse occurred when Milan seemed to have control of the game. "It was a static match; whoever broke the deadlock would win it," he explained.

Allegri also mentioned previous instances against Cremonese and Pisa where similar mistakes were made despite dominating play. He stressed the need for improvement to avoid such situations in future matches.

Despite this setback, AC Milan remains focused on maintaining their strong position in Serie A and preparing for upcoming challenges. The team aims to learn from these experiences and enhance their performance in future competitions.
